LOS ANGELES: The MTV Movie Awards are turning into a free infomercial for the Twilight moviefranchise.
For the third year in a row, the vampire romance was named best movie at the light-hearted – and frequently X-rated – salute to Hollywood’s biggest crowd-pleasers.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which led the field with eight nominations, ended up with five awards. In a replay from last year Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart won for best male and female performance, respectively.
The real-life couple won the award for best kiss, which Pattinson celebrated by running into the audience to smooch his co-star Taylor Lautner.
Pattinson won an additional prize forbest fight – sharing the tub of gold popcorn with Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel.
With categories such as those, nobody would ever confuse the MTV event with the self-congratulatory Academy Awards. The real point of the show is to promote upcoming buzzworthy movies targeted at MTV’s youthful demographic.
Indeed a sneak preview screened of the fourth Twilight film, Breaking Dawn, Part 1, which opens November 18. Other exclusive clips were shown of the supernatural thriller Super8, which opens Friday, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which opens July 15.
The awards are determined by fans’ online votes, which probably accounts for Justin Bieber’s win in the best jawdropping moment category for his 3D concert film Never Say Never.
The Canadian teen idol beat seemingly edgier scenes from such films as Black Swan and 127 Hours.
The producers of The Social Network probably will not lose too much sleep wondering why Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-winning script lost the best line from a movie category to the critical bomb Grown Ups.
The winning quote, “I want to get chocolate wasted,” was uttered by child actress Alexys Nycole Sanchez.

Justin Bieber Behind the Scenes at Movie Awards

This year's MTV Movie Awards went off without a hitch, and that's thanks to all of the amazing people who put in hard work to make it happen. Since everything on stage at award shows goes smoothly, you'd never know how hectic things are behind the scenes! Though I spent the majority of my time in the audience, I got the chance to go backstage for a few minutes, and apparently I have great timing! Right after I got there, I heard tons of screams coming from inside, and I wondered what I was missing--a few minutes later, I found out. Justin Bieber himself came through the doors with his adorable blue blazer and black sunnies.

Obviously things were a little too crazy for me to flag him down, but I thought it was super nice of Biebs to stop for a quick chat and picture with some of his fans!

Though I didn't get a chance to talk to him, he stopped for an interview with Josh Horowitz! Watch the clip below to see what Justin thinks about his big win and whether he's Team Potter or Team Twilight:

Box Office: 'X-Men: First Class' is No. 1 but comes up short against other films in the superhero franchise

Xmen

"X-Men: First Class" may have taken the top spot at the box office this weekend, but it still lost out against most of the previous installments in the superhero franchise.
The film was the only new movie in wide release this weekend and grossed $56 million, according to an estimate from studio 20th Century Fox. That's a pretty good but not great start, considering that Fox and co-financers Dune Capital Management and Ingenious Media spent about $160 million, before tax credits, to produce the movie.
It's also the lowest opening of any "X-Men" film since the original debuted in 2000. That movie, "X-Men," collected $54.5 million when it opened over a decade ago. Since, the "X-Men" films have seen far higher opening weekends, the biggest coming in 2006 with the third film, "X-Men: The Last Stand's" first Memorial Day weekend haul of $105.8 million. And even though the fourth film, 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," tumbled to $85.1 million upon its debut, that was still far more than the fifth film was able to rake in this weekend.
Fox executives have attempted to pin the decline in ticket sales for "First Class" on a variety of factors. To start, this installment -- which explains the origins of the superhero team in the 1960s -- is a prequel which attempts to reboot the series.
This is also the first "X-Men" film that does not star recognizable A-lister Hugh Jackman -- although the actor has a brief cameo in the film. Instead, it features an ensemble cast of lesser-known but still critically acclaimed actors like indepedent film star Michael Fassbender, British actor James McAvoy and recent best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence.
And unlike previous installments in the franchise, which were directed by the likes of bigger names like Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner, "First Class" was helmed by Matthew Vaughn. While Vaughn has garnered acclaim for independent films like last year's "Kick-Ass," the fifth "X-Men" film (which was produced by Singer) is by far the most expensive production he has ever worked on.
Audiences gave "First Class" an average grade of "B+" according to market research firm CinemaScore, which could lead to solid word-of-mouth in the coming weeks. The film also has a good shot of making up much of its production cost overseas, as all of the previous four "X-Men" movies have made about as much abroad as they have domestically.
Meanwhile, ticket sales for "The Hangover Part II" dropped 62% in the film's second week of release. The comedy about three guys who have a wild night out in Bangkok grossed an additional $32.4 million this weekend, bringing the film's domestic tally to $186.8 million. The first "Hangover" film dropped just 27% on its second weekend, benefitting from phenomenal buzz reflected by an "A" CinemaScore. While the sequel received an average grade of "A-," the film opened on a holiday weekend when far more people were anticipating it and rushed out to see it.
"Kung Fu Panda 2," which also opened over Memorial Day, did not have as big a drop in ticket sales. Receipts for the 3-D picture fell 49% this weekend -- not a fantastic hold for an animated family film -- as the movie grossed an additional $24.3 million. The film crossed the $100-million mark at the domestic box office this weekend and its total now stands at $100.4 million. Overseas, the film played in 28 foreign markets and sold $40 million worth of tickets this weekend, bringing its international total to $125 million.
In limited release, Focus Features opened "Beginners" at five theaters in Los Angeles and New York and the film grossed $135,193. That means the movie starring Ewan McGregor as a man who finds out his father (played by Christopher Plummer) has cancer had a so-so per-theater average of $27,038. Weinstein Co.'s "Submarine," about a 15-year-old attempting to lose his virginity, did not do as well. The movie opened in two theaters in New York and two in Los Angeles and collected $40,754 for a soft per-theater average of $10,189.

20th Century Fox presents a film co-written and directed by Matthew Vaughn. Co-written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, and Jane Goldman. Based on characters by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Chris Claremont.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some sexual content including brief partial nudity, and language.
Running Time: 2 hours, 12 minutes
Release Date: June 3, 2011

I must preface my review of X-Men: First Class by mentioning that I've never seen any of the franchise's previous four entries. My knowledge of the universe of the X-Men is limited to mostly a few cartoons and an arcade game that I remember from when I was younger. As First Class is about the origin of Professor X's merry band of mutants, you would figure no previous knowledge of the X-Men mythos would be necessary. And for the most part, I suppose it's not.

First Class begins during World War II, when a young boy finds himself at the mercy of a Nazi concentration camp. One of the men in charge, Dr. Schmidt (Bacon), knows that this boy has a unique power and his willing to slay the boy's mother in front of him to uncover that power. Simultaneously, there are a couple of other powerful children who become acquainted at the same young age, but under much more desirable circumstances.

Fast forward twenty years and the world is on the verge of another World War. One of the children, Charles Xavier (McAvoy), is studying human mutation at Oxford while his acquaintance turned foster sister Raven (Lawrence) is studying waitressing. They are sought out by CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Byrne) after she witnesses Schmidt - now Sebastian Shaw, with the ability to absorb and re-use kinetic energy - and a couple of other mutants attempting to set the wheels of World War III in motion. With the help of the CIA, Xavier and company gather a half dozen or so mutants to help take down Shaw and put a stop to the threat of a nuclear war that would wipe out mankind and make Shaw stronger than ever.

That only scratches the surface of X-Men: First Class. There is a lot to digest in this motion picture, with about a dozen different mutants that all have very unique traits and backstories. While we learn what each mutant is able to do, we're never given any reason as to why or how they discover these traits. It's not difficult to accept that the X-Men are the way that they are, but I couldn't help be curious as to how a child like young Xavier or Erik would discover they can read minds or shape metal. I must also point out that Azazel (Flemyng) - who is on Team Shaw and can teleport - looks exactly like Will Ferrell as the Devil in an old SNL skit with Garth Brooks. For a mutant who can take out dozens of men at once, it makes him seem a lot less menacing than he should be.

The main roles in the film clearly went to the best actors involved, and that helps to make First Class an enjoyable experience. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender do a terrific job of carrying the roles of Professor X and Magneto, giving very human elements to these most superhuman characters. Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence also deserves praise for her work as the insecure Raven. While I am one of the few who didn't care for last year's Winter's Bone, her performance in that film was terrific and with a strong turn here, she is quickly developing into one of Hollywood's best young actresses.

The film itself starts off slow but picks up pace as it moves along. However, even at a 132 minute running time, there's a little something to be desired. Director Matthew Vaughn sprinkles in some obvious winks to fans of the franchise that even a non-fan such as myself could pick up on - and likely some more less obvious ones. The film is built as an elongated prologue and perhaps I'd feel more satisfied if I'd seen all of the other X-Men movies first.

Kajol to star opposite SRK in YRF flick?

Dying to see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol light up the screen with their chemistry? Wondering when the next Dilwaale Dulhaniya... would happen? If reports are to be believed, SRK and Kajol might star opposite each other in Yash Raj's directorial come-back.

The film, which already stars SRK and Katrina Kaif in the lead role, will mark the return of Yash Chopra as a director.
Buzz is that Kajol was recently spotted at the YRF studio and sources say that it was more than just a casual visit.

A source told Mid-Day, "Chopra is very keen to have Kajol opposite Shah Rukh. He is quite fond of both of them and loves their onscreen pairing. He feels that they can create the same magic."

While it is confirmed that Katrina will play the lead, it is possible that the film might have a love triangle with Kajol as the other female lead or cameo.

The filmmaker is returning to direction after seven years. His last film was Veer Zara starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta nd Rani Mukerji in 2004.

Kangna Ranaut to revive retro widow

Kangna Ranaut

The retro Bollywood widow is all set to make a comeback in Reliance Entertainment's and Maruti Internationals Double Dhamaal. The film sees Kangna Ranaut play a character inspired by Jaya Bachchan's role in Sholay.

According to a source: "The quintessential widow form Sholay is back with Kangna in Double Dhamaal. Inspired by Sholay's iconic widow, the director has styled Kangna in a similar look for one of the scenes in the film." Instead of wearing normal clothes required for the scene, the director told the stylists to give Kangana a white saree, just like the ones worn by widows in old films.

Director Indra Kumar says: "It is a spoof on the stereotype widows of B- town. We are not making fun of or passing derogatory remarks on Jaya ji and Sholay. The particular scene, with all the other actors, is a spoof where Kangna is in a widow's garb with minimal make-up."
